The Streptocarpus Greenhouse

Streptocarpus Greenhouse, watercolor, 24 x 18 inches, 1982

This painting is from my series painted on location in the Hunnewell Estate’s greenhouses – working on several paintings each day – while sitting – in this case – at the back door of this greenhouse corridor which housed orchids on my right (many of Walter Hunnewell’s hybrids named after his children) and on my left a mix including streptocarpus which I loved for the ‘whites’ – which came very close to the light and shadows of the clouds while I was working – sitting with my w.c. block on a small step ladder and paints and palette on a crate. The Hunnewell family and gardeners were amazing and generous people and we became friends.
